Retinopathy of Prematurity

Retinopathy of Prematurity is a vision threatening condition of premature babies. Premature babies are born with retina whose vascularization is incomplete. Though in most babies this vascularization gets completed with time however, in some babies this doesn’t happen. Babies, in whom vascularization does not progress normally, are said to be suffering from Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

To know whether a baby has ROP or not, trained specialists do periodic check-up of the retina. This process is painless and not very time taking. Depending on how severe the ROP is the doctor may suggest treatment. This includes, laser, intra-vitreal injections and in extreme cases even surgery. Unless ROP is treated appropriately at the right time, it can cause permanent blindness.

Dr Somnath Chakraborty has been regularly doing ROP screening and treatment including Laser and Intra-vitreal injections at RIB. Dr Somnath lead the first and till date only ROP screening programme in the two Government run SNCUs of Alipurduar district, from 2017 till 2020. Dr Somnath is empanelled as a visiting eye specialist to do ROP screening, with most of the prominent SNCUs of Siliguri, including at Neotia Getwel Multispecialty Hospital and Medica North Bengal Clinic.
